Here’s to You, Kid!

Here’s to You, Kid!2023-11-10T11:31:28-05:00

As part of their “Children First” initiative, WBRE/WYOU airs stories throughout the year on outstanding students who make a real difference within their communities. These students are honored by a Here’s to You, Kid! video segment on WBRE/WYOU that highlights their good deeds and their contributions.

Contributions through this Fund will provide scholarship support to qualified local students who are Here’s to You, Kid! honorees. The duration of this scholarship initiative will be annually from January 1 through December 31, concluding with a celebratory event in February to recognize the previous year’s recipients. (For example the February 2024 event will celebrate the accomplishments of a Here’s to You, Kid! from 2023.

There are two student categories: 14 & Under (receiving a $500 book scholarship) and 15 & Older (receiving a $1,000 award for education purposes). The category a student falls under is based on their age at the time they are nominated. The number of students selected in each category is contingent upon the amount of funding available.

All funds awarded for the 15 & Older category shall be held at The Luzerne Foundation until students graduate from high school and are enrolled in an accredited 2 or 4-year college/university, or trade school. Scholarship payments will be disbursed directly to the schools once students notify the Foundation of their official school choice.  Winners of the 14 & Under category shall receive their disbursement as soon as possible.

A ranking sheet will be used to determine recipients. Factors such as community and school involvement, academics, and a philanthropically-minded and service-oriented attitude will be taken into consideration, as well as a recommendations from the community. A personal essay will be required from each nominee.

Funds to support this initiative shall come from the Times Leader-Book of Dreams Fund of The Luzerne Foundation. This Scholarship is offered in conjunction and partnership with Penn State Wilkes-Barre.
