This fund was established to honor George J. Goode, who was a lifelong resident of Edwardsville. His father worked in the coal mines and both his parents encouraged his love of learning and education. George graduated from Edwardsville High School, King’s College and also accomplished several post graduate degrees. He was a Spanish teacher at Meyers High School for over 35 years and was highly respected by both his colleagues and students and remained friends for life with many of them. He was dedicated not only to teaching, but to coaching football at GAR, his church, his family and was generous to anyone in need. His classes were filled with excitement and a zest for learning. He had a marvelous sense of humor and shared that with all who knew him. He enjoyed the camaraderie he had with coaching and never took any pay for coaching. This is a 4-year renewable award contingent upon satisfactory academic achievement.
