This fund supports Hazleton College Access, a free program for high-achieving, low-income, primarily first-generation, Hazleton Area High School students who are planning to attend college.

When low-income, first-generation students attain a college degree, they are five times more likely than their non-college-educated peers to move out of poverty. College is an investment that not only changes the trajectory of their lives but also transforms their families and communities.

But without the counseling that more privileged students receive, even the most talented and motivated students find the college application process daunting.

That’s why Hazleton College Access provides intensive mentoring to high-achieving, low-income, primarily first-generation, Hazleton Area High School students who would otherwise lack individual guidance in applying to college.

In addition to walking students through the increasingly complex college application and financial aid process, we address exacerbating issues these students often face, including under applying (applying only to less/nonselective college with fewer resources), low expectation, imposter syndrome, language barriers, and more.

At the same time, we advocate for our students at local and regional colleges and universities, help students build confidence and community through a fully funded ski club and other outdoor activities, facilitate informative campus visits, and raise and award scholarship funds.
