On Tuesday, April 26, 1949, Officer Robert E. Mack of the Forty Fort Borough Police Department in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania responded to a report of an elderly couple being overcome by toxic carbon monoxide fumes.  When Officer Mack arrived at 27 Oneida Place in Forty Fort, he found that the elderly male had passed away but the female was still alive.  Officer Mack worked on the woman with an inhalator and revived her.  The woman was transported to the Nesbitt Memorial Hospital in Kingston.  Immediately after the ambulance pulled away, Officer Mack suffered a massive heart attack and died as a result of the exertion from resuscitating the elderly woman and being overcome by the carbon monoxide fumes.

Because of Officer Mack’s ultimate sacrifice while serving the community he took an oath to serve and protect, Officer Mack’s family has established a scholarship fund in the amount of $10,000.00 for eligible students from the law enforcement program at West Side CTC.  Each year “The Fund” will award two scholarships.
