Distinguished, lawyer, author, educator, community leader and philanthropist.  A true believer in education and the right of all to pursue the American Dream, he worked tirelessly to advance the efforts of the Greater Hazleton Area.  His efforts still provide benefits and assistance to the Hazleton community of which he was and remains a vital part.

“PASCO” is a 10-minute, human interest short-form film that explores the profound legacy of Pasco L. Schiavo, a revered attorney, educator, author, real estate investor, and philanthropist from Hazleton, Pennsylvania. Through immersive storytelling and intimate interviews, this thoughtfully crafted film brings to life the lasting impact of Schiavo’s generosity. Featuring voices from The Luzerne Foundation, the stewards of his estate, to community leaders and scholarship recipients benefiting from his charitable contributions, “PASCO” showcases how one man’s dedication to service continues to shape lives in real time. “PASCO” is more than a tribute—it is a testament to the power of giving and the enduring influence of a life spent in service to others. — Directed By: Jimmy T. Pasco L. Schiavo Grants

The Pasco L. Schiavo Fund of The Luzerne Foundation was formed for the purpose of making grant distributions to organizations that qualify as exempt organizations, specifically to promote primarily educational projects and other humanitarian projects in and throughout the Greater Hazleton community which is presently demarcated by the school district borders of the Hazleton Area School District and the Weatherly Area School District.

2025 Pasco L. Schiavo Microgrants

The Luzerne Foundation is pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for nonprofits serving the greater Hazleton and Weatherly areas to apply for microgrants from the Pasco L. Schiavo Fund of The Luzerne Foundation. These grants, ranging from $500 to $3,000, are designed to support organizations working on projects that directly benefit the local community.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a nonprofit organization serving the greater Hazleton and Weatherly areas (demarcated by the school district borders of the Hazleton Area School District and the Weatherly Area School District)
  • Projects or programs must align with the mission of the Pasco L. Schiavo Memorial Fund to benefit and enhance the well-being of the community.

Grant Amounts:

  • Microgrants of $500 to $3,000 will be awarded quarterly based on the scope and impact of the proposed project.

Application Deadline:

  • This is a rolling application process, and funding decisions may be made throughout the year.  To be considered for 2026 funding, all final applications must be submitted by November 2.

Pasco L. Schiavo Forum Grant

Every year, local organizations serving the greater Hazleton and Weatherly areas gather at the Pasco L. Schiavo Nonprofit Forum sponsored by Pasco L. Schiavo Fund of The Luzerne Foundation. Each nonprofit organization has five minutes to present its background and mission, and how it is addressing the Hazleton and Weatherly community’s needs. Nonprofits attending the Forum work in the seven areas served by the Foundation: Arts & Culture, Education & Scholarships, Health & Wellness, Historic Preservation & the Environment, Neighborhoods & Community Development, Social Services, and Youth Issues.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a nonprofit organization serving the greater Hazleton and Weatherly areas (demarcated by the school district borders of the Hazleton Area School District and the Weatherly Area School District) are invited to apply for a spot in the Pasco L. Schiavo Forum. 
  • Projects or programs must align with the mission of the Pasco L. Schiavo Memorial Fund to benefit and enhance the well-being of the community.

Grant Amounts:

  • Grants of $5000 to $10,000 will be awarded based on the scope and impact of the proposed project in the current year.

Application Deadline:

  • Applications open on July 15, 2026 and must be submitted by August 21, 2026.
