Pasco L. Schiavo Grants
The Pasco L. Schiavo Fund of The Luzerne Foundation was formed for the purpose of making grant distributions to organizations that qualify as exempt organizations, specifically to promote primarily educational projects and other humanitarian projects in and throughout the Greater Hazleton community which is presently demarcated by the school district borders of the Hazleton Area School District and the Weatherly Area School District.
2025 Pasco L. Schiavo Microgrants
The Luzerne Foundation is pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for nonprofits serving the greater Hazleton and Weatherly areas to apply for microgrants from the Pasco L. Schiavo Fund of The Luzerne Foundation. These grants, ranging from $500 to $3,000, are designed to support organizations working on projects that directly benefit the local community.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Must be a nonprofit organization serving the greater Hazleton and Weatherly areas (demarcated by the school district borders of the Hazleton Area School District and the Weatherly Area School District)
- Projects or programs must align with the mission of the Pasco L. Schiavo Memorial Fund to benefit and enhance the well-being of the community.
Grant Amounts:
- Microgrants of $500 to $3,000 will be awarded quarterly based on the scope and impact of the proposed project.
Application Deadline:
- This is a rolling application process. Applications must be submitted by November 3rd to receive funding for 2025.

Pasco L. Schiavo Impact Grant
We are excited to announce a funding opportunity for nonprofit organizations that serve the Greater Hazleton and Weatherly areas. Pasco L. Schiavo Fund of The Luzerne Foundation is now accepting Letters of Inquiry (LOIs) for grants ranging from $50,000 to $250,000 over a two-year period. This grant opportunity is designed to support initiatives that positively impact the Greater Hazleton and Weatherly areas.
Grant Overview:
Grant Range: $50,000 to $250,000
Grant Duration: Two-year funding period
Eligibility: Nonprofits that provide services or programs within the Greater Hazleton and Weatherly Area School District Zip Codes.
How to Apply:
Nonprofit organizations interested in applying must submit a Letter of Inquiry (LOI) by September 1st, 2025.
The LOI should include the following key components:
- Overview of your organization: Mission, history, and key accomplishments
- Project description: Goals, objectives, and expected impact of the proposed project
- Project budget: Total funding request and how the grant funds will be allocated over the two-year period
- Key personnel: Who will be responsible for implementing the project and their qualifications
Please submit your LOI to through the Grant Portal by September 1st, 2025. After reviewing submitted LOIs, selected organizations will be invited to submit a full grant proposal due November 3rd, 2025.
Selection Criteria:
We will prioritize organizations that:
- Address pressing needs in the Greater Hazleton and Weatherly areas, including workforce and economic development, education, health and wellness, arts and culture, social services, and environmental conservation.
- Demonstrate a clear and measurable impact
- Show strong capacity for successful project execution and financial management
*Please be aware that this grant opportunity is intended to fund new projects or initiatives within your organization. While you may include a request for general operating costs as part of your project budget, applications focused primarily on general operating costs will not be approved. The grant cannot be used for salaries, and religious entities are not eligible. Capital projects are eligible for funding. The Pasco L. Pasco L. Schiavo Forum Grant
Every year, local organizations serving the greater Hazleton and Weatherly areas gather at the Pasco L. Schiavo Nonprofit Forum sponsored by Pasco L. Schiavo Fund of The Luzerne Foundation. Each nonprofit organization has five minutes to present its background and mission, and how it is addressing the Hazleton and Weatherly community’s needs. Nonprofits attending the Forum work in the seven areas served by the Foundation: Arts & Culture, Education & Scholarships, Health & Wellness, Historic Preservation & the Environment, Neighborhoods & Community Development, Social Services, and Youth Issues.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Must be a nonprofit organization serving the greater Hazleton and Weatherly areas (demarcated by the school district borders of the Hazleton Area School District and the Weatherly Area School District) are invited to apply for a spot in the Pasco L. Schiavo Forum.
- Projects or programs must align with the mission of the Pasco L. Schiavo Memorial Fund to benefit and enhance the well-being of the community.
Grant Amounts:
- Grants of $5000 to $10,000 will be awarded based on the scope and impact of the proposed project in the current year.
Application Deadline:
- Applications open on July 15, 2025 and must be submitted by August 21, 2025.
