Col. Timothy Pickering Legacy Society
The Col. Timothy Pickering Legacy Society is a membership list of those who have named The Luzerne Foundation as the beneficiary of any type of planned or deferred gift and who choose to be listed. Membership is self-reported. We know many others who have included The Luzerne Foundation in their estate plans, but who choose to remain anonymous.

There is no minimum amount needed to qualify only that you have made the necessary arrangements and are willing to be listed. To date we have received bequests, or know of future bequests or other types of planned gifts ranging from $1,000 to $1,000,000 from Society members. We do not ask how much is being left to the Foundation. We encourage donors to discuss their gifts with us to make sure we can comply with their wishes, but this is not mandatory.

The Col. Timothy Pickering Legacy Society members may designate the use of the distributions from their future gifts, or may leave the distributions to the discretion of The Luzerne Foundation’s Grants Committee. A Col. Timothy Pickering Legacy Society gift may be used to establish a new Named Fund (if the size requirements are met) or may be added to any of the Foundation’s existing funds.

Bequests are the most common method used to leave a gift to the Foundation. However, we also know of people who have made the Foundation the beneficiary of insurance policies, established a charitable trust in favor of the Foundation, signed an estate note or deferred pledge and/or used other methods. All can qualify a person or couple for membership in the Society.

We list The Col. Timothy Pickering Legacy Society members in all of our publications - our Annual Report, our newsletter, ads in newspapers and event programs . Each listing brings new inquiries and new members.

We hold a special reception just for Col. Timothy Pickering Legacy Society members and Society members are invited to all other Foundation events.

Timothy Pickering was born in Salem, Massachusetts on July 17, 1745 to a family prominent since the early years of settlement. His father was sufficiently prosperous to provide him a good education, and he graduated from Harvard College in 1763. He later studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1768, though he never attained distinction in his profession. Rather, he was commissioned a lieutenant in the Essex County militia in 1766.
